We wanted to remind you of an important race-day rule for all WPA sanctioned races that will be enforced on August 4th: The coast guard requires all paddlers need a life vest or waist belt life jacket and a leash on board to paddle. This is a new law that is now in effect and we want to ensure that all paddlers are aware of the guidelines. As mentioned on the New York Government website:
“Stand up paddleboards (SUP) are considered a vessel when it is used outside of the surf zone or swim area. A life jacket is required for each person on board a paddle craft, which include canoes, kayaks and SUP's, as well as a sound signaling device.”
For more information, this link details New York Maritime law in regards to paddle boarding. We have also included an excerpt below and attached some helpful documents regarding the new law.
Your safety is a top priority to us, thus, we will be providing whistles to all paddlers. Main Beach Surf and Sport, the race presenter will have waist vests on site for purchase ($89) at the check in area. You are more than welcome to provide your own should you wish, but in order to participate in Paddle for Pink, all paddlers MUST have a life jacket or waist belt life jacket with a leash on board their paddle to participate in the race. No paddlers registered for this event will be permitted to paddle board without the above mentioned equipment.
We will also have our amazing partners, the East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue, returning again this year at Havens Beach to look out for all of our paddlers!
Paddlers are still accepting donations
Please help them reach their fundraising goals, and support lifesaving research.
